driving down the road, to and from work i'm fine. although oil pressure gets low as i reach destination.
drive for longer than like 20 minutes, and when i come to a stop, oil pressure goes to 0. red light comes on dash. tap the gas and oil pressure comes back up, then goes to 0 again. start driving and oil pressure comes back up. next stop, it goes dead again.
yes there is enough oil. i just did an oil change with 10w30. yes this was happening before the change. i had the pressure sender unit replaced about a month ago cause i believe it shorted out. could this be a problem of the sender unit, or do i need a new oil pump? i can actually see the gauge go lower than middle when i'm driving for longer. and then it actually moves up/down with revs, like real oil pressure.
Sounds to me like you have a 300 with a lot of hard miles on it...or just a lot of miles. Your cam bearings carry most of your oil pressure, yours sound like they're worn. As oil warms up it loses it's viscosity and gets thinner. In any case I would try running a thicker oil, 10w40 should be okay or SAE30. Another thing you can try is add a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer, it takes the place of 1 quart of oil (1qt Lucas and 5qts oil). It works really well, it should give you a few more lbs of pressure. I use it in all of my vehicles old and new. Lucas mixes with your oil and stabilizes it, prevents it from breaking down in severe conditions. It sticks to metal parts and makes a super slick surface and nearly eliminates friction. You can find it at Advance Auto Parts and NAPA, and it cost around 8-10 dollars a quart.
My truck has always did that also.....kinda scarry if you have 0 psi.
After my rebuild it got a little better, after I cleaned all contacts on gauge cluster it got a little better but still dropped. Replace sending unit and verified
actual pressure and checked calibration of gauge. I'm confident everything is accurate now. Still lowers, but well within normal operating range. What is the actual oil pressure ?
