I have a 91 F250 right now. I will have about $300ish by the end of the month. I just put gibson headers along with a 3" exhaust. My choice is either F3TE heads, Cam, oversized injectors, or a chip. What would I notice a nice gain out of?
I would get either a chip, an adujustable fuel pressure regulator, or a better air filter setup. the heads won't make to much difference and the computer wont like the cam, or injectors. Hope this helps some.
Is it even worth tryin to mod one of these to be fast. When I say fast i mean less than 6 sec 0-60's and low 14's high 13's 1/4. I liked this do to dual purpose. Offroad power and some nice drag times. What 0-60 time would I be lookin at on a 91 f250 460, cammed, chipped, injectors, heads, headers, and exhaust.
No idea on drag times, but I know that a built up EFI 460 would be a hoot to drive. To do it right you are looking at a lot of money. Cheaper mods will get you a little increase in power, For the heads you will have to have yours ported as there is no aftermarket performance heads for the EFI 460's.
I think you would have to find a custom chip for that. The only chip maker that I found was Motivation. You give them the specifications of your mods that you do to the engine and they will program a special chip for you.
i just ported my F3TE heads. fully ported the exhaust side and did the bowls and port match on the intake side as they are already massive. there was a lot of work in reshaping the exhaust bowl short side radius. and those damn hardened exhaust seats are tough to grind, but they came out really well. i don't have access to a flow bench to tell you how well it worked, and it isn't installed or running yet. but it should flow gobs (technical term) more air than stock
also put in a .490/.495 lift comp cam. and i don't anticipate any problem with the efi. i have done similar mods to lots of small blocks with SD efi and they purr like kittens and run much better than stock.
i should also share this:
i was talking to a ford friend about making a heavily modified 460 or 514/521 work with ford EFI. he has seen people make it work using a computer from a '94-'95 302/e4od truck. the 302 has the same firing order as the 460 and these 2 years are mass air and can controll the e4od, and are sequential efi like the mustangs. just get a shop to burn you a chip on the dyno to handle the extra cubic inches. and add 6 wires to your harness for the injectors (for sequential) and add the wires for the mass air meter.
you can run a totally streetable, yearround, docile, pump gas, clean idle, massive power 521 cid truck motor. with affordable ford parts.
fyi: he said dyno time with a custom burned chip is in the $400-$500 range.
