coolant leak help needed

I have a 96 F250 diesel. It just developed a coolant leak in the dangdest place - from a flange behind the crankshaft pulley. I thought at first it must be running down from the water pump but it isn't. I checked it out very carefully with a mirror. I can't imagine what coolant is doing in this area. Any help would be appreciated - also any advice on how to pull the crankshaft pulley without disassembling the entire front end.

Are you absolutely sure the leak isn't coming from the thermostat housing, and merely running down to the spot at the crankshaft pulley? The housings are prone to leakage, and that would be a lot easier to explain than what you're seeing.

I just had a problem with coolant leakage that is different but also odd. All the hoses were good, as was the pump and t'stat housing. It turned out to be the oil filter housing. Apparently the water jacket has access to the oil filter housing to take advantage of the heating element, and the gasket was leaking. About a $10 gasket and an hour of time, plus two quarts of oil. I just happened to see a droplet of coolant drop off the bottom of the oil filter, otherwise it would never have suspected that location.

The leak is not from the places suggested. It's from the flange behind the crank pulley. I checked it out veeeeery carefully. The Haynes manual I have is virtually worthless but I did get a CD service disc from a guy and looked at the exploded view of the engine. There actually7 is a large "engine cover" that goes over the whole front of the engine and it has a water jacket. I didn't see the flanged part in the picture so I don't know if it holds an oil seal or what, but it does look like there's supposed to be coolant in there. Wierd! Sooooo, anyone know how to get that crank pulley off relatively easily?

Oops! My bad! It's coming from the water pump seal. Started pouring out then became visible. Thanks for your help
