I travel all over the country in a RV and have recently bought a 1996 Ford Ranger to tow behind it, it does have a manual transmission, my question here is will i have to disconnect the drive shaft or can i tow it in neutral?
If it's 2wd, just put it in neutral and keep the speed below 55. Make sure the parking brake is off. If its 4wd, put it in neutral, transfer case in neutral (manual or 2H depending on your type) and hubs unlocked if they are manual.
I would disconnect the drive shaft, I know of a guy who towed his vehicle to school behind a u-haul and when he went to drive the car the transmission was damaged. I would rather go through the work of disconnecting the drive shaft than replacing the transmission.
From the owners manual for my 87: Towing with "manual or automatic transmission
1 Place transmission in neutral
2 Max speed 35 MPH
3 Max distance 50 miles.
NOTE: If a distance of 50 miles or speed of 35 MPH must be exceeded, disconnect driveshaft.
Makes sense for a automatic, but it's strange that being towed would hurt a manual trans.
