Still havin' trouble

OK guys and gals,
I could really use some help here. A while back I posted about balancing 285's. Well we got that done and I still had the symptoms like one of them was still out of balance so I switched and put the old stock 265/70/17's back on. All is well. Well, for about a week and a half anyways. The shimmy is back. Something else I've been noticing is that I'm having a hard time keeping the front end aligned recently. Could these two things be tied together? What does everyone think could be causing these annoyances??

Thanks,
Jake

I dont know if this is gonna help much, but on a 99 ranger I used to have i put chrome wheels and 31x10.50 on it, and they would balance out but still drive like crap. That was just the chrome wheels though, I believe. The ball joints had gone out, so i had them replaced, which also replaced upper and lower control arms. It drove better after that.
I recieved the truck used and I am sure it had been totaled before i got it. With 800 dollars invested in the tires i figured i would have it aligned. I didnt have an alignment problem, but i just wanted to protect the tires. They tried aligning it 3 different times (sears) and it would be pullin and the steerin wheel not centerd, so basicaly i didnt have an alignment problem, got it aligned and had a problem. Turns out the real axel was cockeyed they called it dog trackin, one rear wheel was more forward than the other. They restored the alignment to the previous setting and handed me my money back.
Like I said this probably isnt gonna help. But just a story.

Hey zman thanks for the reply? Anyone have a general idea what upper and lower control arms cost? I kinda wonder if mine is "dog trackin" abit too cause the other day one of my friends was behind me and he asked me if it always looked like it was dog trackin. Any fixes for that? We're the 3rd owner of this truck (bought it with about 128,000) so only God knows what it's been through. Here's a rundown though - 131,000 new tranny, 138,000 new ball joints, 141,000 new U- joints (ok those are kinda expected to go bad), 144,000 reman. engine, and several alignments along the way. I'm now at 146,000. Yea, not fun puttin almost what we paid for it back into it and still have a nice pile of junk.

End of rant
Jake

EDIT - Would new shocks or a steering stabilizer help at all?

Well,
Today I went and measured and sure enough the passenger side wheel is an inch further back in the wheel well compared to the driver's side. Wonderful. Anyone have a remedy to fix this or will it always be like that? Also, I've noticed that if I hit a bump the steering wheel doesn't shimmy, then when I hit another bump it starts again, and so on. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Jake

I'm getting ready to change my upper and lower ball joints on my 2000 2wd.
I didn't price the lower because I am just changing the ball joint. On the upper, you have to replace the control arm which includes the new ball joint.
$62 for the upper arm and joint at Napa. Made by Dana.
