I just got my new 4" dynomax downpipe today. It has a "dent" in it that looks like it was made to fit the back of the head better. I have read a lot about the bigger downpipes not fitting at a body seam on the firewall. Has anybody installed this dynomax pipe? Will this dent allow me to fit the pipe without messing with the fire wall? It is part number 53293. Thanks.
Dent? Is the dent supposed to be there? Can you post a link to the site where you purchased it? Is the dent placed in the appropriate spot to clear the firewall seam? Or is it on the front side so as to give more room around the head?
I bought the pipe from Four Wheel Parts in Portland. They drop shipped it to me. I tried to find a pic online to show you but I can't seem to find one. The dent would line up somewhere on the back of the motor. Looks like it was made with a 2X4 at a angle just after the bend down from the turbo. I'll give them a call now since it's during business hours.
Well I tried calling them but I was put on hold for over 10 minutes, long distance, so I e mailed Dynomax. Here is what they said...
""Thank you for your inquiry for Dynomax Exhaust. We appreciate your
interest in our products. In regards to our Ford Super Duty front pipe
#53293, this pipe is for manual transmission only which is why it will have
the flat spot. If you have automatic, you need our part #53282 in
aluminized or #53236 in stainless.""
I don't have a Dynomax pipe, but I have a 4 inch pipe and there ain't no dent in it. In fact, the pipe doesn't even really get that close to the manual trans to need any extra clearance. I have an 02 6 speed and it fit just fine, but was a little tricky to get in place at first. Someone else who actually has a Dynomax pipe will probably chime in, but I think you should get a different pipe.
Well I took the pipe back to the store and the sales guy pulled out a downpipe for a auto and it was the same except for the dent. Since they have different part numbers I decided to keep it. I'm going to put it in Saturday.
