EPA Proposes To Eliminate E-Check In Miami Valley

POSTED: 12:34 pm EST February 22, 2005
UPDATED: 3:41 pm EST February 22, 2005

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday morning that it is proposing that E-check testing in the Miami Valley be eliminated. The EPA said it is looking at other alternatives to reduce emissions.

EPA officials said the program will end at the end of the year for communities in the Dayton, Cincinnati, Xenia and Springfield area. However, the program will continue in Cleveland and Akron areas for the next two years.

The exact counties that Tuesday's decision affects is Butler, Montgomery, Clark, Greene, Warren, Clermont and Hamilton. The counties in the Cleveland area that will continue the program for the next two years are: Lake, Cuyahoga, Portage, Summit, Medina, Lorain and Geauga.

Officials said they decided to end the program now because the state's contract with the company that conducts the E-Check expires in December. State officials said this will end the 10-year program that is the state's most unpopular plan.

Now, state lawmakers will have to craft a new plan to monitor air pollution. However, it will have to be a plan that does not involve tailpipe testing. The state is considering plans to reformulate the gas that is purchased for cars and possibly order new air pollution controls on industry.

The proposed plan will not be final until state legislatures vote on the plan.

i read about that in the local news paper here. butler county, the county i live in, is one of the counties that is not going to have it anymore. they said that 92% of all cars are passing and that 95% of all newer cars are passing. plus the newer cars throw a check engin light anyway if there is a emissions problem.

I wonder what they're going to do with all them buildings they built? Give them to the local goverments? Sell them at Auction? Flatten them and sell just the land? What do ya'll think.

By the way, I think the Cleveland area got screwed on this.

Now when I replace my exhaust I don't have to worry about that E-Check anymore.

guys don't get your hopes up. It ain't over till the EPA says the state can end the testing. We over here in Ky just went through it. Oh yeah they said no. Epa won't agree just because the contract is up.they want to see the states plan to fight the pollution so that you don't have tailpipe testings

That sucks. I have my truck regesterd at my parents in Geauga county. Unless I find a job that pays good down here I'm going to be moving back that dirrection in June.

As for the buildings: I work right next to one and it has been a topic of converstation at work. I'm guessing that they will sell them at auction the buildings are in great shape and with a little work would make a good bank or drive through store. Also a custom auto shop could by one and install dynos in them and just add on for working space. Maybe even start a company that just does dyno testing for all those guys that want to take there ricers out to the track.
