What Gears Do I Have?
I have a 1979 F250 Ranger XLT 4x4. I am wondering is there any way I can tell what gears I have in it without opening it up? What gears were available from the factory in this year? I am currently running 35" tires with a 4 speed manual transmission. When I shift into 4th gear my rpms have to be real high or it lugs a little. Even at that 4th doesn't have much power right of the shift. My guess is my gears are too high. Any help would be appreciated.

3.50's are most common on 4x4's. There is an axle code on the doorjam data sticker, you can post it. You can also look at the tag on the rearend if it is still there. It will be under one of the nuts that holds the center section into the rearend. The bottom line will say something like 3 50 9 or 3L50 9. The 3 is sometimes hidden by the nut. If it has the L between the first and second numbers, then it is a limited slip.
With 35's, I would run a 4.10 or 4.56 gear, but you will have to change the front ones to match too.
