I havethe post down below named 80 f-150 I6. I am contimplating on either replacing or rebuilding it. I just some input on what might be wrong with it. Haven't torn into it yet. Don't really know that much about the 300 I6s. SOme bogging and jerking then cutting off. Adjust the dist. Is fine for a while then back to bogging and jerking. Popped while trying to start and now won't start at all.
Could it be a stuck valve or something else that would cause the backfire/pop when you tried to start it? Is the engine still in the truck? If so, do a compression test.
Sure maybe you don't have some kind of problem with your distributor? Did it run totally normal after you messed with the distributor, or was it real weak, hard to start and sound "lazy"? I'd check the wiring to the distributor, maybe check the pickup ( I don't know how to do that, must be a continuity test or something you can do on it though). As far as the compression jumping right up and not holding, that sounds like a problem with your compression tester to me. My compression tester uses valve stem cores in the adaptors and if they go bad the gauge won't hold the reading. I wouldn't totally rule out the ignition module either. Wouldn't hurt to have a spare anyway, you could always try one of them too.
Thanks.....I junked it today. Engine was shot. The pops it jumping timing and it had a blown head gaskets and cracked block. It obviously was rode hard and sold wet.
