This might be a simple question, but if im getting fire to my plug wires and new plugs, and everything is timed right, why would it not fire/crank. Even when I pour gas in the carb. Any ideas?
I mean it wont fire and run, sorry for the confusion. It spins fast, and I cant get it to tighten up any by moving the dizzy. All I got out of it today was one backfire through the carb.
An engine needs three thing to run gas spart applied at the right time and compression. If it was running fine before I would start at the timing again.
It sounds like a timing problem to me. Did you remove the distributor? If so it's possible you installed it with the timing 180 degrees off. I would start by making sure you have the number 1 cylinder at top dead center, verify that both valves are closed. Remove the dist. cap and make sure the point on the rotor is lined up with with the no. 1 plug wire
Sorry about that. If the point on the rotor doen't line up you may need to remove the dist. and reset it. The reason for the backfiring through the carburetor, is all timing...chances are it's advanced too far. What is happening is the spark plug fires before the intake valve closes all the way...this is what causes the backfiring condition.
Well it supposedly run before I got it, I had to put a cam lifters and gear set in it ,due to the fact the cam was worn down the the casting. When I installed it all I made sure it was on tdc and the marks on the set were aligned. I also replaced the head gasket because the guy who had it last said it had blown. I figured it might have been 180 off, but thats not the problem. Ive tried grounding the motor and made sure the rockers wasnt to tight, but I still cant get it to run. Replaced the points and rotor yesterday because it didnt have any spark, but it does know. It was electronic but has been converted to points.
I would grab a compression gague and see what it says. If good compression recheck the fireing order and the direction the dizzy is spining. I almost goofed that up last weekend (was looking at wiring the dizzy backwards) with my daughters turck, I had to get the book out. Remember it is reallly easy to get these distributors a couple teeth off and then they will not fire.
