hmm. I thought that I read somewhere that letting the engine run until it runs out of gas is bad for the engine?

Also, could one not use 2 vise-grips and pinch the gas line at both ends near the filter?

Well, I could use the vise-grips, trouble is that the steel tends to stay crushed once crushed. The Aikens Ford procedure is to trip the emergency cut-off and let the truck run out of gas, it just shuts off. A re-attempt at starting confirms no pressure. They have probably done thousands of fuel filters there, one of the largest truck dealerships anywhere. A diesel, however is a different animal due to the type of injector system and pump, NEVER let a diesel run "dry". $$$$$.

I thought the fuel line was rubber? Is it a rubber insulated/covered steel line all the way from the tank to the engine?

Relax, are you having a bad or what??? Everyone has to start somewheres. He wants to make sure he doesn't break anything.
Ask all the questions you what. Get a Haynes manual is a very important repairs manual ( its cheap) it WILL make your life a lot easier, and save you some headaches. I like the step by step details these books have. Let us know how it went. Ps don't use a drop lite, a lot of people forget. The fuel may spray on the bulb. Then I guess this thread will end. :0 sorry
