Also What could be happening is that your air filter could be clogged a little then engine begins to suck oil reversely though pcv-or vacum lines.....Run your truck without air cleaner on to see if oil consumtion goes down...Plug all vacum lines if oil is found inside them....but leave other end open....just plug at intake...or you will create crankcase pressure...thats what would cause this exxesive amount of oil burnng anyway....and try this to see if this helps before you do diesel fuel thing....vent top oil filler cap somehow...either by drilling hole in it or whatever or see if theres a line to valve cover disconnect it then try running truck too to see it that cuts down oil problem.
OK i checked the air filter..it looked like i could have been the original from how dirty it was..but there was no oil in there ..or on the filter..no wet oil as i can see
Well thats a good sign.Put a new one in there.Run it and see if that helps.... if not, Pull some vacum lines off of intake now..and look for oil inside them....You know if the filter is as bad as it sounds the engine has to suck air from someplace...I'll stay here and walk though this with you and try to correct this problem.
well rock..ill have to get back to you later..my son has a football game at the syracuse dome...thats 2 hours from here..ill check what hoses i can find..ill get back to you either later tonight or tomorrow..thanks again
When you get tired of messing with it, your best bet is to get a good used engine from a junk yard and take it over to the school shop and let them swap it in. A couple of days and probably around $400-$500 and your ready to go.
Rocky2,
Are you trying to tell me that you think it is sucking 2 quarts of oil thru the PCV? If it was, it would clearly show in the intake. The intake would be dripping with oil.
As for the engine flushes, well......
Your comment about gunk being diesel, I guess that should tell you something. If not, I hope you aren't working on vehicles in a shop.
When you are going thru a quart of oil every couple days or so, then maybe you might look at teh crankcase ventilation system.
When you are going thru a couple quarts every couple days, then you should take a serious look at the engine itself.
When you are using 2 quarts a day, there is a serious internal problem. All the additives in the world are NOT going to cure it. Vacuum lines are NOT going to be causing it.
Well ill tell you what..i don't have 4 or 5 hundred dollars to spend at the moment..if i did i would not have posted the question in the first place and if i were a machanic..i would not have either..thanks for all the help everyone tried giving me..all i asked was for some info
john, it isn't your fault.
I did explain that you could do the valve seals yourself, provided that you have access to some tools and a good manual and IF they are the problem.
Im not blaming myself..i happened to come into 1500.00..i told my kid i would buy him a truck..i look and looked. accually i was looking for a jeep..lol..well anyways..i drove this truck it ran fine yes i did look to see if it was smoking ..and no it was not smoking at all..i did check the oil..the guy said it needed to be changed..well anyways i bought it..then realized it was short on oil 2 dqays later..well 2 days again it was short..i made a appointment to have the college here check it..2 days before i brought it in..something happened to the clutch..well it needed a slave cylinder and a new clutch..now mind you i had the truck a week now..they also said a new oil pan gasket..so now im into it 300.00 more then i had..so the college fixed the clutch and the gasket..they were not sure if thats why i was loosing the oil..i took it home and 2 days later the light came on again..like i said..im no machanic what so ever...i mean tune ups yes brakes yes stuff like that..but when it comes to a engine..im the type of person who always has parts left over..im like ok where does this go..so as far as taking it apart myself..no can do..no im not blaming myself..but im pissed at the dude who sold me the truck..seeing we both live in the same town..me personally i would not do that..i would sell it for alot cheaper then i got it for ..or sold for parts..yes i understand alot of people are messed up like that..but im not one of them..i wrote in this colume to find out if any of the stuff on store shelves accually work..thats why i wrote in the first place..i just wanted to know if i could get a quick fix to last a couple months
First of all a 91 ranger 4x4 for 1500 bucks. That should tell you something right there. I know that under KBB a 91 ranger 4x4 in fair condition with NO options goes for 2000 dollars. Thats with NO pw,pb,pdl anything. You get what you pay for. i read all of the posts. I know you aren't looking for anything but suggestions, but I hafta. Remove the oil filler cap with engine running and see if there is smoke coming out of it, Or oil blowing out of it. If yes, then your rings are definately bad. If not, then it is most likely electronic or mechanical malfunction. Not a bad engine. Contrary to most engines are pretty darn simple. especially a domestic ford. I've repaired quite a bit on those 2.3's. but seriously go out to any mech shop (a decent one, not like "Otto's Auto Shop" but a good one with clean people and good rep. Ask around. They will hook it up to a scope and computer for around 60 bucks. and tell you EXACTLY what is wrong with it. Personally if it isn't a cheap fix. SHIP IT! clean it up and sell it for 2000.
P.S. DIESEL IS A DETERGENT!! JUST LIKE ATF. TRy both, but only half quart. ATF is better
Oil is giong somewhere,,,,either its still in engine or being burnt clean, and with no smoke out of tailpipe. It is possible that the vacum lines can burn oil it happens sometimes with brake fliud and atf.But they will smoke most often,With two plugs per cylinder it might not.Oil's got to come though the top of engine intake or valve stems or the bottom oil rings....There could be two quarts of oil stuck on top of engine unable to drain down!Oil will get though valve stems on intake side.Or maybe you could have the wrong dip stick???If the engine runs good 'm not sure its bad.I won't hurt just to look at vacum lines for oil.Its your call...And take valve cover off 1st before throwing more money at it.
I think a something has been missed here. John wrote a few posts back that the mileage has some discrepancies in the reporting of such. This is a MAJOR no-no for anybody! I would check with a lawyer in your area John and also see if you can get the mileage verified by a mechanic. You might be able to sue the bast@&$ that sold it to you and get your money plus some back from him. This would solve all your problems, give you some more money to buy your son a decent ride, plus the added bonus of teaching the SOB that sold it to you a lesson that you don’t screw someone over with the mileage change. My 2 cents; it just pisses me off whenever I hear of someone pulling crap like this. I mean be honest with a person when you’re selling them something for God’s sake. If they don’t want it you’ll find someone that will buy it. Anyway I hope this helps and I hope you get the guy legally, if not. Do you know where he lives? I’ve always heard sugar in a gas tank will real screw up an engine, never tried it out though. Revenge is best served up sweet, and sugar is real sweet! And yes I know that's illegal and immoral also but hey the seller screwed him over big time!
