My 86 F150 with 351W HO, stock Motorcraft/Holley carb (freshly professionally rebuilt), stumbles on hard acceleration from a stop or low rpm's. I was reading a thread and Caddy 53 had mentioned a similar problem he had after removing cats and running true duals. Mine also has no cats and dual glasspacks. Is this a too-lean problem in the carb? can it be corrected by a card adjustment? I haven't checked timing yet (tomorrows project) but it seems to be ok. If it can't be corrected at carb, must I install cats? I really don't want to. Here in Alabama, we don't have emission inspections. Would a different exhaust system (Flowmasters) help with more backpressure? Thanks.
I think you're looking in the right area...concentrating on the carb. I don't think the lack of back pressure would cause a stumble on acceleration. It may rob some torque on the low end and hp on the top end. One thing that is common on the Holley's is the blown power valve. If your engine has backfired at all, you probably need to replace this. My son keeps a stockpile of power valves on hand and he even has the Holley with the anti-blowout set up. I know the Holley's can be a real pain to setup with all the variable adjustment...so, either get yourself a good Holley book..or find someone who specifically knows how to work on Holley's and let him set it up for you.
