hi all you explorer owners my dad found a 98 ford explorer with the 4.0. he asked me if i wanted to buy it, the guy wants $1800 for it the only catch is the transfer case is broken it will only drive in 4lo. i dont know the milage of it but the whole front end was just redone like balljoints tierods all that stuff, and its clean in and out with just a couple small hail dents. do you guys think this is worth buying? i already found a transfer case for $250 and ive heard its an easy fix.
My tranny and diff have failed. Read through the Exploder threads. The number of problem posts is really discouraging.
These things are twitchy on the highway, and very limited off road. Of course, the problems can be fixed or reduced, but still, this is far from the best rig on the road.
And, how did the t-case get busted in this thing? What else is hanging by a thread?
And is it a SOHC motor with the self-destruct mode cam chain tensioners, and miles of rubber hose waiting to pop in the cooling system?
Sorry, I'd steer clear.
I know there are others with trouble free '98s, but your prospective rig is already in trouble, so it don't count.
Depends on what everything else looks like. How many miles. What does body and interior look like. Which engine? If you got it running, and it's in good shape, it's worth probably $4000.00 - $5,500.00. I would not be afraid of it but like 85e said above, if the differential broke, what else is screwed up or hangin by a thread. If AC has failed and been replaced, it would be more attractive to me.
