Simple Bed Question 53-56...Help

I am starting to mount my bed and Have a ?? about the Front Crossmember by the Cab.....I have to drill the holes for the wood and the Front Bed Panel because everything is new......The Bolt hole that mounts to the Frame....That Bolt support were it mounts to the Frame is suppose to be facing toward the Rear of the Bed Right????? There is also A hole right in front of the support hole that is drilled into the front Bed Panel. Is that support bolt suppose to be hidden under the Bed Strip or is my Cross facing the wrong way???????... .Been a long time since I had it on...Thanks

Thanks
Patrick

Patrick -

Just took my bed floor apart. The two bolts that mount floor wood to the forward crossmember go thru the strip (between boards) just like the forward-most bolt in front of them do. The carriage bolt that goes thru to the frame is just longer and bigger.

Hi! superman, If i undetand your question correctly the upper supposed to face the cab, and the lower lip,(the one with the mounting holes) faces the rear.

The hole directly in front of the mounting hole is for bed strip bolt, there shouls be several more evenly spaced.

Patrick - Sorry. I didn't answer your question.

The row of bolts that attach the forward end of each bed wood strip is in line with the bed corner bolt holes. These mount to the flange of the forward crossmember. That flange faces forward. The (2) frame bolts line up just aft of that row on two of the strips.

Good luck.

I'll be redoing my bed soon. I already bought the wood kit and SS strips. I noticed the bolts your talking about and they are just the way the other guys said. In fact, I think mine are still original. At least they look that way. I tried to remove a few bolts and they don't break loose, even with an impact. I have a feeling this job is going to be a real pain. Was planning on removing the boards in a few weeks.

Two days ago I went to NPD & Carpteners for parts I just replaced the front panel, and front side (small) panels on my bed "55", I thought it would come right off after popping the rivets out wrong! it was pretty well spot welded as well, After reading this thread I had to check to ensure my front brace was facing the correct way. The way I've had it for over 16 years is the same way Mar-K has it pictured in their catalog; the bolt that goes through the frame is towards the rear of the truck and the board/strips are mounted toward the front of the truck.

I put a steel floor in the bed and the wood floor can be lifted out, all this because I couldn't figure out the bolt thing. Note to fatfenders, there, I admitted I screwed up.
