i am lookin at another ford truck that wil save me some gas. i found a 1982 flareside that has a 3.8 V6. i have tried lookin it up but have found nothing to do with a 3.8L. is the guy mistakin, or did they put a 3.8 in other years? thanx
The V-6 doesn`t work great in a full-size truck,I think thats why Ford only offered it a couple years.Just get a straight-6 or a 302.I have an `86 F150 XLT Lariat ext-cab long bed 2wd with the EFI 5.0 and AOD.It gets really decent mileage,I think I`m at around 21-22 hi-way,not bad for a full size,long bed,ext-cab truck.Never figured out my city mileage,but its not bad at all.For camparison,I know a guy with a 460 `89 F250 and he gets 10-11mpg if he`s lucky on the hiway.
thanks,
i had never even heard of the 3.8 and wanted to make sure there was really a 3.8 v-6. i have a 400 in my 78 and it gets about 11 mpg highway and i don't even want to know the city mileage. acouple of my friends have 460's in there trucks and would die to have 10 or 11 mpg on there motors.
I'm in the middle of converting one to a 302, and ran into a few bugs along the way.
Every bit of that truck was designed to be light duty, including the suspension. It will be a while longer before I get it all set up right.
Having gone down this road as an experiment, I would say that if you see one with the V6 in it up for sale, under no circumstances offer more than $300.00 US for it, because converting it calls for changing just about everything you can think of.
