I have a 99 F-350 DWD,,I have to manualy lock the hubs for 4 wheel drive ,,nothing happens in auto mode,,now getting a grinding noise it seems to be related to 4 wheel mode,,any suggestions????
No ,,been having the problem with having to lock in the hubs in order to get front to activate,,but shouldn't you be able to ,,leave in auto setting and still get 4 wheel drive. The htr doesn't always switch now that you mention it,,kind of has a mind of it's own,,lol
Vacuum goes to the hubs and a leak will cause problems. A 99 with ESOF is waiting for a problem anyhow. The hubs are junk. I would just lock em or toss em and get warns. My opinion only.
Maybe you have a leak and thats your problem.
When I asked my mechanic what he though about the ford superduties he said "they are great trucks, but make sure you get one witgh manual hubs and not the auto style. He also said that the vacuum system develops leaks and is expensive to repair.
i had my right front go bad too....the O-ring came out in it. easy fix, but the hubs when u get them appart arent much to look at. they are sort of flimsy and dont look like they can hold up to much useage. in the "auto" mode they have a vaccum and rely on some cintripical force to get them going....makes having manual hubs nice. im just gunna save up and get a good set of WARN hubs and save more work
I too am having some problems. My 4x4 still works in auto mode but while in 2x4 the front axle wants to lock in. The defroster over takes the floor at higher rpm's. Upon inspection I see no appearent line problems with the naked eye. I know that there is probably a vacuum problem somewhere. Any clues as where to start. I assume that the 4x4 vacuum pulse solenoid is working properly since the 4x4 works on demand.
well,,thanks guys..Guess I'll save up for some warns too!!I've been leaving them locked in but you can't turn too sharp without thumping noise .I'm going to get it up in the air this weekend and get a closer look,,
As 99 said before you have a vacuum leak!
Most of the time its the hubs themselves ,big o-ring dries out from heat and non use, also the hubs get dirty and gummy from road grime .this will eventually lead to wheel bearing failure also. The vacum is a pulse type not a steady vacuum from the solenoid.
You can test the lines and the hubs with a handheld vacuum pump.
Ford also has a tsb out on the procedure for their techs
Get the warns and plug the lines.
