My trucks been running great since I got it but recently the exhaust manifold cracked on front side by the carb. So I bought a new one and an int/exhaust gasket to go with it. Took everything apart carefully and put it all back together by the book. Well, it doesn't quite sound the same and is a bit sluggish on take off. I can hear some air or a leak coming from the firewall are. I checked the timing, it didn't change, and is fine. Help, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, where the intake and exhaust split at the carb didn't have a gasket, but the felpro kit came with one and I installed it.
Did your idle change? Is it harder to start cold, and idle fast when it is warmed up? You may have a vacuum leak, may have pinched a wire between the manifold and head, or maybe the gasket slid out of place a little. May even just be a hose sucking air back there if you have a vacuum tree like my 84. Has 3 or 4 hoses on it and 2 plugs. Get it warmed up and idled down. Take a can of starting fluid and spray around any suspect areas that may be causing you to get a vacuum leak...around the intake mounting flanges or at the "air leak" sound if you can pinpoint it. Don't unload the whole can under the hood, just give little shots around where it may be leaking. You may want to check your EGR valve as well. The idle will change VERY noticably when you find a spot that may be sucking air.
On fords theres always some kind of vacum line tree t where they all meet on firewall .Also lastchance is right its a vacum leak...I like to retorque everything to block after a complete cool down of a running hot engine.
I checked everything and couldn't find a problem until I decided to bite the bullet and pull the manifold back off. I found the problem, it was a pinched gasket at the #6 cylinder. Bought a new gasket and was even more carefull than the first time. Got it all back together and all is well. Finally!!!!!! What's the best way to adjust the carb, it's a Carter 1BBL, the timing is dead on, it's just sounds like it's idling too fast. Any help would be appreciated.
I would get a portable engine dwell/tach to check the engine speed. Then if it's not along the lines of 600-700rpm (underhood emissions sticker), I would look at the following items: The high rpm's could be from having the air cleaner off when you are listening. If that's not the deal, then are you checking the sound after you have it warmed up and you have disengaged the fast idle cam. If all of these are okay, then the idle adjustment screw is on the first adjustment screw on the right hand side (as you look towards the cab).
