New Motor Died. What happened?

Just switched my 351m to 400. I also put an edelbrock intake & 1406 4barrel on it. It ran great for about 75 miles. I was pulling a steep mountain & it was holding back. Felt like it was out of time to me. On my way home pulling the same mountain, it got worse. Had to go 45 mph in 3rd gear. I got to the top & was coasting down the other side & it just shut off & started to backfire. Had to tow it from there. I had athe timing gear replaced about 1 month ago when & had the 351m. Any suggestions?

Well it sounds like time to go back to basics. Does it have fire? Does it have gas? What does the compression test tell you? Has timing slipped?

Good luck,
Doc

is the dizzy loose? does the engine crank? spark? have you pulled a plug to see if the timing has jumped?

Dist. was tight. It did crank but not real fast. Couldn't check much. Had my dog & my 9mo old son. Not sure if I'm going to tell my wife. Probably not!

how long did it take to pull the 351M and drop the 400 in and have it running?

A clear indication of timing chain failure is to have the timing way off. Old Ford engines are known for timing chain failure anywhere after 80K miles. First check the timing, then loosen the distributor and check for timing chain slop. Directions with pictures can usually be found in repair manuals. If the timing chain checks out start looking at compression etc.

If you find an old engine always check and replace the timing chain. The OEM setup was an aluminum hub with a nylon gear that always failed. A clear example of planned obsolescence.
