My 2004 V8 with 22,000 miles has had multiple drivetrain problems. I've given up on the drive by wire throttle delay. I've been through the rough shifting and delayed engagement problem. I've had my right front half shaft replaced because I noticed it was leaking during an oil change .Now I'm stuck with the bucking and chattering you get from the 4WD that you get when turning sharply backing out of a parking space. They tell me now :"yeah, Ford knows about that but they haven't figured out how to fix it". In addition in what may be related a related problem, when turning a corner from a stop sign or light I get a grinding feeling in the front end. Anybody had similar problems and had them fixed? I like everything else about the car and hate to sell it but I'm stating to get concerned about this thing once it's out of warranty.
I had the same bucking problem with my 04 explorer. The dealer just installed a new PCM, and I haven't had the trouble with the 4x4 engagement anymore.

Capchad, that is much appreciated. I assume a PCM is some kind of computer module. Is there more than one type of PCM? Would you happen to have a part number from you service ticket? Thanks
Another note, along with my 4wd problem, I also have a problem with a shuddering when turning from a stop or slow speed. My tech and the shop foreman says that the shuddering is produced by the clutch packs in the limited slip rear diff. My 04 explorer is getting the new revised clutch packs on Monday. Your dealership should be able to look up the notes on the revised pack on their service computer. I hope this helps.
That is a big, big help and much appreciated. I'm going in tomorrow and the girl did mention something about a recent service bulletin on clutch packs. This reminds me that last summer I was speaking to a woman in a gas station about the problems and she said her dealer replaced the clutches in the rear end and it was now OK. So Ford is just now putting out a service bulletin about it?? I'm just frustrated because ever since I've had this thing, it's been one issue after another with the drive train and I'm usually told 1. We can't duplicate the problem or, 2. Ford knows about it but they haven't come up with a fix yet. All this on a vehicle which has been on the market since 2002. My local dealer has tried to be of help but Ford is the one I fault. And even if they fix it by putting in a new PCM, how much damage has been done to certain components by the grinding and chattering. I'll bet the Toyota 4-Runner chat rooms are really boring. Thanks again for the help.
I got my explorer back the other day after they installed the new clutch pack in the rear end, and also a sensor. It seems to be all better. I bought my exp from a Ford dealer in Norfolk, but my favorite mechanic moved to a Ford dealer in Chesapeake. Hope yours is getting straitened out.
"I've given up on the drive by wire throttle delay."
I've pretty much given up too. Every time I took it to the dealer they couldn't duplicate the delay. I drove a couple of used 2004 explorers and they were no where near as bad. The dealership updated my PCM every time which I thought initially helped but didn't.
I've been making significantly larger payments to get this thing paid off early (one more year). After that it's gone! I'm sure when I try to trade it in on who knows what, they'll notice it has a significant throttle delay and tell me it's not worth much.
I'm 49 years old and have bought a ton of cars/trucks and never bought a foreign vehicle. I'll be considering all options next time.
