I have a 1986 F-150 with a 5.0L EFI motor in it.
I am looking for some bolt on performance parts that wont break
the bank. I was thinking of a Cam, some headers (with the O2 port),
and a cat-back exhaust from summit. I want to have some good power but I would like to have decent gas mileage. What size Cam should I go with? Some company names and web sites would be nice if anyone knows any.
Thanks
Brian
Stay mild on the cam side. There's a book called "How to Build and Modify Ford Fuel-Injected 5.0-Liter Engines" by Tom Wilson that explains the in's and out's of modifying these engines. It's a good resource. Unless yours is a California model, you have the speed-density air/fuel metering system. Anything that will lower the idle vacuum past a given point will confuse the computer, and give you driveability problems. You can convert the truck to mass-air metering, which will allow more performance upgrades without throwing off the computer. The only drawback is that the conversion kits are pricey. With some know-how, you can rob a mass-air system from a junkyard donor, though, and save some money. Just some thoughts...... the performance mods are a good idea, but I would recommend researching your options to be sure that the engine's management system (computer) is going to like what you have planned, otherwise you may be disappointed.
