It can be - it depends on how advanced the alarm is (e.g., does it have starter kill, remote fuel shut-off modules, etc.). Some alarms are amazingly easy to take out without affecting the vehicles operation - considering that they shouldn't be that easy. Vipes is made (now) by Directed Electronics and they have both high-end and low-end alarms. It really depends on teh model and the installed options. Usually a stereo shop, as much as I hate their pricing, will remove an alarm for little cash. For most people, it is well worth the $50 or so, especially if it is a tricky alarm. A test I use to do is to power-down the alarm at the battery or the alarm module and see if the vehicle will still start and function right (dome lights, etc.). If sho, then you can easily remove it (or simply leave it un-powered at this point). If the vehicle won't start or operate right, then you've got more work on your hands and you've got to decide if your up to it.
