How much work should it be to find WORK?

I am a retired United States NAVY Petty Officer, and I think I have found the perfect job and/or career for me in this area.

The ("company") requires however, a social security card (easily forged) or a birth certificate, in order to establish Identity. Both of those of mine were destroyed in a fire several years ago.

But the originals of both were used to enlist in the USN twenty years ago, I served for twenty years, and retired at half of basic several months ago.

To swear the oath required both my birth certificate, and SS ID, and my social is plainly shown on my Military ID - which is permanent, but marked "retired" as opposed to active duty.

This - to the (company) is not considered acceptable as proof that I am who I say I am, and thus: I am going bankrupt while I try to get copies of the original documents through channels that any jackanape could take advantage of for identity fraud if they had a few scraps of information and a 37 cent stamp.

~ It puzzles and annoys me to no end.

I'm running out of money, I have to go to a tech school to do the job, and I just can't go until I get one or the other - a birth cert, or a Social Security card (and I have a statement mailed to me by the social security admin concerning my benefits).

I have thought of many things, over the past two weeks, but chiefly among them are:

IMBECILES!
BLOCKHEADS!
(numerous profanities)
And so forth...

I think a number of people at the company think much as I do, and really - I'm just venting.

But have you ever heard of such a thing? It's as if they want to see just how bad I want the job, and that has me thinking....

Do you have a belt buckle with your name on it? That's all most places require around here.

In all seriousness, it's a big enough pain in the butt finding a job. Why do places make it twice as hard? I've had to jump through so many hoops that I didn't even want the job afterwards.

Sorry to hear about the SNAFU's, but being from the Navy, you should know what red tape is all about. Try corresponding with the county courthouse where you where born, they should be able to hook you up with a notarized copy of your BC. We did that for our child after his BC was lost. Sent for the copies where he was born, mailed from Kentucky to Pennsylvania in about a week. I would walk right into the SS office for your area and get try and get your new SS card. I worry that getting any of this stuff has become three times as difficult since terrorists attacked us. You must have an SS card to get any job, I needed to show it for every job I ever had since 1978. Good Luck- Ben AT2/FCO VP64, NAS Willow Grove & NAS Bermuda

Good jobs are hard to come by. I would jump through any and all hoops.

Why? Because:

Why not go to a recruiting office or other Military office for added support.

Getting a replacement SS card is easy, (yeah right) once you have your birth cert. You need to call the courthouse where you were born and have them fax you the form to request copies of BC. Then you mail that in along with fee and wait and wait and wait. Get a hold of your local liasion (sp?) officer and also call your local social security office. If they will accept your millitary ID and Drivers Lic. You can get a new card right through their office. If not then you will need A Birth cert. I belive that the Military ID along with your DD214 should be proof enough.

Ok, So I did a little searching on the web and found just what you need.
Here is the link that tells you exactly what you need to do. Good luck and remeber, it can't rain forever!

I wouldn't take it either.
SS card and a picture ID or no job.
just because an ID has a SS# on it is meaninless. I need the card itself, and a copy of it for the records

Sounds like another government job! They might do this just to see if you are willing to jump through worthless hoops for the job. Seems some outfits (govt. included) use this method to weed out the folks that aren't willing to put up with all the B.S. that it takes to get the job in the first place.

Its not the business thats making applicants jump through hoops, its the government that requires the paperwork to be done in ONE specific way.
An SS card (not just the #) is absolutly mandatory for hiring a person.

And that's why we have all the employeed illegals in the states? SS cards are a "dime a dozen" and are NOT a form of ID. Employers should verify SSN before they take for granted that the number on an application or SS card is valid.

I went down there today to the SS office (Funny - did I hear an echo from **** Germany just then?) and they gave me a reciept that they claimed "Most employers will accept", but it may be still to no avail. (No number on it)

I spent $125.oo on tools today, and have kept the reciept in case I need to just say:

"As nice as your prospect just might be - YOU'VE CAUSED ME MORE HARM THAN HELP. Thank you very much and good-bye"

In which case, they go back to Home Depot, and I am more desperate than ever.

I almost wish I was a smuggler, or some other kind of outlaw.

I have tech skills falling OUT OF MY POCKETS, in an area where nothing like that is going on.

I wonder why I did that to me?

I won't give up!

~Wolf

PS: I reiterate -

What the hell could be more definite than the SSN on a PERMANENT Military ID gained through active duty service for twenty years or more?

THIS IS INSUFFERABLE!!! It is stupid.

I know I could (and probably should) get all angry and crosswise about "This ain't right, and it ain't fair, and after all them years of service, and all this, and all that...."

But it isn't seemly.

I'm going to play this out as the hand comes up on the table.

I pray I don't lose.

It's a hassle but it isn't the employer's fault. There are so many legal aspects to employment and so many illegal aliens out there competing for our jobs. I had to go through panel interviews and background checks and everything to get my job. Stick with it. Your a retired veteran! Use your benefits. Go to your local VA office and see if they can set you up with something temporary until you get the job.

Sours my milk, Wolf...sours my milk.

I think I would have to stroll in, in uniform, salute the clerk, walk right in to the admin's office and ask him just what a person that had served his counrty had to do to get a foot in his stinking door.

If you don't like that I have a cozy little cabin in the riverbottoms you're welcome to stay in until they beg you to come back.

Other than that all I can say is hang in there. Sometimes these times come in bunches like grapes.
