ok, in my old 302 my oil and temp guage did not work, it was all connected, i just recently changed my motor, another 302, they still don't work, (by the way the 86 motor swap was good, efi converted to carb, used the old distributor works fine) the only reason i want the oil guage is because its a diff motor and would be nice to know a couple of things about it. can anyone help with this dilema? Thanks for all the help with the swap!

The sensors should have a single wire going to them. Take the wire off, and with the key on, the guage should read all the way to cold or hot, or for the oil guage low or high. Then take this same sensor wire, and ground it to the engine block, or a good ground somewhere under the hood. The guage needle then should swing all the way full scale opposite from when the wire was off. If both guages pass this test with the (make sure the keyswitch is on), sensor wires off and then grounded, this means the wiring and guages are good, and there is something wrong with the sensor. Make sure there is no thread tape on the threads of the sensor, because the outside of the sensor must be grounded for it to work.

Take a analog volt meter set it for 12-20 volts dc turn on the switch and see if you havw a pulsing 5-6 volt current on one of sensor leads to ground if not then you need to check/replace the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument panel it is a litte metal rectangle that snaps on to the circuit board on the instrument panel.
