Stripping shifter

I have a 95 F150 5spd. I know how to get the shifter out of the truck, I want to know what the best way to repaint it would be. Should I just sand it down and rattle can it or what? I am repainting it because the previous owner loved to not use the shift ****, but the 6-8" under it so that part is rubbed down to bare metal and its getting pretty ugly.

I painted the shifter in one of my work trucks. Just sanded it down well, masked everything well, wiped it down with Xylene, let dry, primed, then sprayed 2 coats on it. I used Plasti-Cote automotive spray paints (rattle cans) for both the primer and finish coats. The color I used was called trim black. It is very similar to original color. I was too lazy to take the stick out of mine. So, if you've already got yours out. It should be a breeze.

Good Luck!

Chris

Just sand down with like 200 or what? I was thinking would it work to have an engine shop boil it, and then a friend at a cycle shop powdercoat it. Would that hold up? And how good would the dip take off the finish.

well having it powdercoated, would be far far better then paint, if you can afford it, up where i am powdercoating is very expensive, but if you have the resources thats the best way to do it.

the paint wont hold up as good, but would be better than bare metal.

Would a dip at an engine shop clean it to bare metal? What would I use for sanding it?

yes, I do belive a dip would bring it to metal, BUT, sandblasting is the best way to prep it for powder coat, I did some work this summer, and had suff powdercoated, and the company wanted everything fresh sandblast, no rust, it was alot of fun to do things like a snowplow, and have it not flash rust overnight, or practicly on the way accros town to the powdercoaters.

but your best bet it so check with the powdercoater, and see what they reccomend for surface prep, they may also be able to sand blast or bead blast it right on site,

as for sandpaper, I would just rub it down with some 220, and paint it.
