9" rear end

can anyone tell me if the 9" rear ends were installed in 80 to 86 trucks? were these rear ends adjustable? i mean without using the collapsable washers and coloured shims, i saw one at the junk yard, i think was a 9 incher that you could adjust by removing a lock from a collar(i'll call it") with lots of holes then you turned the collar to reduce or make greater the backlash in the rear end. any ideas, i've seen this setup in some older manuals i have. thanks.

Some trucks had the 9".

The 9" has shims and a crush spacer on the pinion. The ring gear is adjusted to the pinion by turning the collars as you called them.

To answer your first question...Yes. The 9" in these bodies was the last and best of the bread. They were the ones with tapered roller bearings on the axle ends. The pumpkin was basically the same as all 9 inchers, and had 31 spline axles.
