Anybody have any experience with hardwood laminate flooring?
I like the Bruce at Lowes's and the Wilsonart Red Label at the local floor store. Price is within 10 cents per sq. ft. Which brand would you select and ease of installation?
Any problems with squeaks or buckling between the two brands?
Not sure on brand but that stuff is easy to install. Be sure you leave about 1/8" - 1/4" away from the walls so the floor can "float" and expand. If you leave the space you won't have any problem with buckling. If you don't leave space you will have problems with it. I have never had problems with squeaking. Also, make sure you put the foam pad down between the laminant and subfloor.
Hope this helps. I have put quite a bit of this down and it really isn't a problem. Just take your time.
First off, laminate flooring is NOT hardwood. Hardwood is made of a species of wood such as Oak, Cherry, Hickory, or Maple. Deciduous species of trees that are "hard" slow growing wood. Pine is a soft wood.
Laminate flooring is made by a high pressure machine, that compresses a thin veneer of paper laminate onto a substrate of "hardboard". It's a masonite type base made of recycled paper and pulp.
Hardwood, (the real wood) can last over 100 years and can be refinished several times. Laminate can last 10 to 50 years depending on quality and traffic and cannot be refinished, ever. Once the surface is damaged or worn through, it's toast.
We just put some inexpensive laminate ($2/sq ft on sale) in a bedroom. It looks great. Its not as nice as real wood obviously but it was waaay cheaper. We did it in spare bedroom just to see of we would like it figuring if we didnt, either we wouldnt have to look at it much or we just tear it up and be out only $400 or so, but we are pleased with it and will probably use in some other parts of the house.
Look at which has the best warranty I think Lowe's will be the better vendor just due to their attempt at customer service. Since I work there part time I have seen this in action a few times and they warranty some real stupid stuff just to keep peace....
