whats up? i have several questions about the truck i am going to recieve. my aunt is giving me their old work truck. i was wondering about the motors that come with the truck. what size are they and how much power do they make? its a 1986 with only 80,000 miles and a automatic tranny. im not really looking to upgrade the truck with much more that mabey some rims, possibly off of a newer f150. is the lug paterns the same or are they different? im not really much of a truck person, and actually i like import cars but my last car got repoed but i appreciate all kinds of vehicles. anything that makes power is ok to me. so please dont email me with hate mail about import cars. i just want a little info on the truck. anything will help.
It could have a 300 six cylinder, a 302 v8, or a 351w v8. Look on the tag under the hood when you get it. You will find, a trucks biggest asset is torque, not horsepower. If somebody on here gives you the horsepower numbers (which I don't know offhand), the number will not be impressive, but if you were to compare torque and rpm, you will find much more at a lower rpm than you are used to. If I were you, I would hang on to it, even though it may not be much to cruise in, because you can always use a truck. And if you keep it, you will find all your friends will end up borrowing it to haul something. I don't know how people get along without a truck.

All F-150 wheels have the same pattern up to 1997, so anything up to there would fit.
Were it me, I would also hang onto this truck, given the chance! With proper care, this truck should give faithful service for many more years. Is it 2-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive? I have a '86 F-150 4WD, and I love it. It had 39,000 miles on it when I bought it. Currently, it has 183,000+ on it. I have replaced the clutch, and the shocks (all 6 of them), and redone the brakes a few times. I also had to replace the transfer case, but I found a used one for $200, and I also have replaced the oil pump. I do all the work on the truck myself. Saves a bunch of money on mechanic labor! Personally, I don't see how folks without trucks get along either. God willing, I'll never have to get along without one!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jan-02 AT 09:09 PM (EST)]I am driving an '86 F150 LB, ext. cab, w/ the 351W in it. On the way home three days ago I turned 294,000 mi. I have found the engines eat a little oil as they get older, but a quart or so extra every 3k miles isn't so bad given the mileage mine has.
The engines could not be easier to work on. Everything is accesible and makes sense (except for the damn emmisions crap). I don't know the 302 or I6 at all. But, engine aside, this truck is great. My tailgate kind of sticks sometimes, and, if it rains for days on end, my windshield has a small leak on the passenger side at the top seal.
That is the extent of my complaints about it.
Keep it??? Probably. From what it sounds like, no one ever worked this truck to the bone. It is great if you take care of it and don't treat it like a one ton pickup. The major non-engine problems I have seen were from people off-roading or pulling/loading way to much.
Just don't try to pull five tons and change the oil every 3k mi. It will last forever.
yeah i have a 86 ford with the 6 clyinder in it and i'm replaceing it with the 351 i have on the engine stand in the garage. that truck was given to me when it had 183,000 miles and my dad has had it from the time it was brand new. soon as i got it i had to replace the whole bed and get some body work and a paint job then i lifted it and put the tire's and now i'm going to put the engine in, when it get's totally done it's going to be a badd a$$ truck. i know in a couple of years before collage i'm going to get me a 02 f-150 crew cab but until then i'm going to make mine the pimp truck. i know that lifting the truck aint nothing to do. i had to take the smog control crap off the 6 clyinder and rebuild the carb and put a high volume oil pump because the engine has seen it's better days but other than that i drive it everyday and it looks darn good . soooo shows that a little money and elbow grease and you have a super tight looking truck. i woulld keep that truck if i was you. as for the rims you can put a 97 or new stock rims on a late model ford becasue my friend has another 86 and he put his dad's 99 ford stock rims with 315 sand tire's on his 86 everybody said it couldn't be done but i have seen it my self and they bolt right up the onlything that is different is that there 16 and normally ford runs a 15
