with a 7.3, it seems to be getting weaker, i dont think it just the air filter, and we run power service throught it every once in a while, what could it be
back a month or so ago it was making a funny noise, when you would be at highway speed and let off the accelerator enough that the momentum of the truck was carrying you rather than the engine it would make like a rubbing noise or like a fan sucking air or something, it was weird and did it when it was realy cold. it did it when you would coast or decelerate (after downshifing not while downshifting" took it to auto zone (closest place ) and they scanned it for codes and it "passed" as thier little reader said.
what could it be, its got 73,000 miles on it, we replaced the cam position sensor a while back and the fuel restriction sensor was replaced by the dealer ship we had a fuel leak, its been getting weaker and weaker for a while now, and not just all of the sudden, its just getting more noticable. what do ya think. something wrong with the turbo (causing the funny sound) i dont know i'm not a deisel guru thats why i'm turning to yall
also fuel filter is changed at every other oil change,

Sounds like your exhaust back pressure valve closing. Mine would do the same when I let of the accelerator. Unplug it and see if it cures the problem. Should be a connector at the front drivers side corner of the turbo pedestal.
Drive it. See if it solves the problem. The EBPV is a butterfly valve in your exhuast. It closes in cold temps to help the engine warm faster. Its common that it malfunctions and does exactly this.
ok clean air filter helped a bit, but not a whole lot. were gonna get a k&n and just keep it clean whenever. instead of just changing it at oil intervals.
so i called a diesel shop and he said that the ebpv was a possibility but that just unplugging it would do anything to help, he said they charged 50 bucks to scan it, i told him i thought that just becuase the check engine light wasnt on that there could still be codes to be read and he said that was correct, something about active codes and inactive codes, is this correct and is $50 a good price for a real computer scan and not the free POS auto zone scan.
If you unplug it it won't activate. Meaning it won't close. Its worth a try before spending the 50$'s. And just because their is no CEL now doesn't mean their are no codes. If it comes on , then clears their should be a code stored. And if you really want a good intake set-up I would recommend the Tymar system. Excellent filtration! My .02cts.
Hmmm, your turbo intake wheel look like it's been dusted?
i dont get it?
if your asking if the turbo part that the air goes through is covered in dirt the answer is know, but it is leaking something at the seam that has cover the back half of the turbo. is this what you are refering to.

What I mean is if dust and particulate matter have been allowed past the air filter which chews up the leading edge of each blade of the turbo wheel. The turbo blades are supposed to be sharp as a knife and straight on the leading edge. If they have a rounded appearance or are dulled, then you have a dusted turbo.
race, i understand about the low power and rushing noise when cold, but the engine performs poorly at all temps now,
kwik i am no diesel mech so i have taken anything apart (to look at turbo blades), i just know enough to know that they are expensive to have somebody work on them and it is easy to be had buy some mechanics, i want to have up to date info for myself if i go somewhere to have it fixed, basically i want to learn so i dont get hoo dood.
