speedometer not working

I have a 1987 Ford Bronco 351 engine C-6 trans. The speedometer isn't working and the cruise control naturally doesn't work. The speedometer pinion gear appears new and is attached, "cable" to the speedometer works.
I thought the gear might not be going deep enough to to mesh with the internal cog on the tailshaft. I contacted a local speedometer and tach servicer and he informed me that some of these fords develope an, " internal to the tailshaft", problem that must be fixed. Has anyone else had this problem? Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated as the local ford dealership refuses to tell me anything because, "its out of date". Also I have a Hayes and Chilton service manuals each show a different speedometer pinion gear.
Thankyou for any information.

You could try fishing the speedo cable out from under the dash and then driving ahead slowly and back...

Just a thought.

Hawk,

Check out the similar thread by norcalcapri. He fixed his speedo problem. The plastic gear had been stripped on the inside.
