Starter problems

1999 7.3 Powerstroke. Old starter intermittantly didn't eguage flywheel. Flywheel didn't have any chipped teeth so starter was replaced with new one. New starter frequently does not enguage with flywheel. Do I need shims for starter.

Sorry nobody got back to you sooner. Welcome!

I've got an '01 and my first starter went bad at 25K miles or so. Being it was still under warranty I had the dealer install another one. A week or two later, same problem. Went back got a new one and wrapped it with header heat wrap and 1 1/2 yrs later no problems.
It could be you just got a bad one. Is it new, rebuilt, what brand...?

Welcome emby , make sure the starter is not one from Auto Zone or simular discount parts store , their rebiult starters just aren't up to par . Go to NAPA , their rebuilts are much better ( or for a little more you can get new ) . I had the same problem with starters , bought the NAPA starter ...End of problem !

Austin,
Thanks for the reply, The garage told me no rebuilds were available so I went with a brand new factory starter. The problem occurs during hot or cold starts. I think I need to reinspect the flywheel.
