Well, I told you guys the posting would come soon enough, id love to have an automatic in the old girl, her working days are done, would the AOD transmission fit behind a Y-block (and in the tunnel)? does advance adapters or anyone make a bellhousing for it? or am I limited to a c4/c6?
the c6 would be my tranny of choice, but since it wont be hauling or towing (at least not much) Id like to have an overdrive.
If your question is "Does anyone with a pickup have a Y without bellhousing mounts"? I have. My Y has the front through timing case mount, with rear mount at the transmission rear. However transmission is not an automatic, it is a 3 speed.
My feelings about this type of "flathead mounting system" is that everything possible should be done to decrease the weight between mounts (remember the Y is about 100 lbs heavier than flattie in factory form). In the case of a manual transmission that includes aluminum flywheel, and in any case every aluminum replacement possible, including aluminum carburetor. Don't forget to replace the starter with a lightweight mini hi torque. No stone unturned. I don't know the weight of the AOD you are thinking about, but the lighter the better, and if it is much heavier than a C-4 I wouldn't do it.
The flatheads had a sway (can't think of a better way to describe it) of up to 1/16 inch due to their design and method of mounting, front to rear of tranny. One of the many reasons Ford went with the Y design was to eliminate that, and as an additional measure they mounted the rear with the bellhousing ears.
In my case there was no other option at least that I have figured out.

46Y I have done similar swaps . If theres room I like to use
57/59 car mounts on the sides of the block@ build a crossmember from framerail to framerail. This gets rid of the { sway} you describe. One of the mount adapter companys makes this crossmember. I think SPEEDWAY MOTORS @ JC WHITNEY still sell them.
Have fun HOTWRENCH
I have looked at the problem area at least a hundred times, but will look again (by now I should have its picture blazed in the mind!). It is the driver side mount.
Mike
Well my idea was to use the adapter, then a C-6.(Mychoice) Apon looking It appears that I must remove the crosmember, to make this install. So Of coarse I was wandering if any one removed this crossmember and what the affect were if any? To eliminate the SWAY I thought i would just use a dog bone on the left side.
The truth is, an AOD won't hold up with a Yblock (unless you babied it and drove like an old person,it may last), because those are high torque engines, they are enough trouble with your low torque passenger cars, take some good advice, and be happier, an use a good C6
