Hi everyone I'm new here. Seems like a great site. Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could help me decide between two cams for a 460. The cams are the Lunati 00096LK 214/224 .516/.543 and the Comp 4x4 xtreme 262, 218/226 .514/.524. The engine has edelbrock 95cc aluminum heads, speed pro pop up forged pistons, approx 10.3 compression, dui ignition, weiand stealth intake, edelbrock 1411 750 cfm carb. I was wondering which would make better torque, or if you guys have a better suggestion.
Oh yea, the tranny is a c6 with a 2000 stall.
Thanks a lot.

Reason: forgot cams
I am a big Comp Cams fan. Heard lots of good things about that cam. Can't get too techy without knowing what you expect from the vehicle in terms of usage, go fast, or pull hard kinda thing. How heavy is it, what is the final drive ratio? The Comp tech line does a good job of helping you to figure this out. 1-800- 999-0853 Been a while since I called, but I think that is still a good number. Caution: We are all tempted to go too big, we love the sound for one thing, and the top end #'s are fun to throw around. But for me I am looking for that seat of the pants stump pulling grunt, and low end throttle response; that can go right away with too big of a cam. Just a thought. Good luck. -Dale
dyno program needs:
Bore x stroke - unless stock
Cylinder head type - wedge, canted or stock
Compression ratio
Induction -CFM and manifold type , i.e. dual plane, single plane, etc....
Exhaust type- manifolds, headers, headers with mufflers etc..
Camshaft type - stock, hi perf, circle etc...or manufacturers number
Lifters - solid, roller, hydraulic
Lift at valve - both intake and exhaust
This is with DynoSim (advanced form of DD). Assuming stock bore + .030/stock stroke 460, Edelbrock RPM unported heads with as-delivered valves, & avg. street headers/duals/mufflers:
No prob, I've been working with these two cams, among others, for my own project & had similar combinations already plotted.
If you do the off road thing I'd lean towards the Comp, since your effective gear ratio with the 35"s is not that low, & the Bronco is kinda chubby. Me, I'm actually looking at the Lunati since I have a very traction-limited '55 F-100. And a very stupid right foot.
Any way ya look at it with either cam, that much torque from 2000-6000 is pretty nice.
Hey Homespun91, I just noticed you are from the Peoria area. I live in Chillicothe. Anyway, I think I'm going to go with comp cam because it has a bit more torque lower in the rpm range and peaks lower also. Going 120 in a bronco is kind of scary.
This is a small world! I am from Ottawa Il and I am trying to figure out what cam to use also. I am just looking for suggestions. I have a pull truck that I want as much power as possible out of it. My mods are MSD ignition, L&L headers to 3" duals, electric fan, bored .060, ported heads on exhaust side, will have 12:1 compession, full roller rockers, Stealth manifold and 1" carb spacer, Demon 850 with mechanical secondaries and 14" K&N, Holley Black electric fuel pump, modified C-6 with 3000 stall. I hope that is everything. If you could help me with some suggestions that would be great. Maybe even some HP numbers. Thanks
A couple (actually, a lot) of questions- 1) 429 or 460 based? 2) What axle gearing? 3) 2WD or 4WD? 4) What rpm range or peak are you looking to make power at? 5) What tire limitations, if any? 6) Are you thinking about a roller or a solid cam? 7) I'm guessing this won't see any street time, with 12:1. ? 8) What bottom end mods have you done or are planning on, if any? 9) How's the C6 set up, & do you plan on shifting at all? 10) Got any flow #s on the heads, or what was done to the exhausts, & what castings?
I'm not super versed on pulling trucks (I used to be involved with a modified twin BBC tractor, a whole different animal) but a lot of the pullers I know of, using 33" tires, are turning 7000 rpm plus, and more. That's using some pretty healthy hardware- girdles, four-bolt conversions, filled blocks, and/or sometimes A460 Ford Racing blocks, or Eliminators, if they can get away with it. That's Missouri pulling, though; I don't know much about IL pulling, other than going to the M-P Super Pull in Henry (population. 14, or 15 when the mailman's going through)
Mshane- I'm mentally going through my list of Shanes, trying to figure out which one you might be, or belong to. I graduated from IVC (hanging my head in shame while I type...) in '84, so I'm not too up on the current residents, in spite of still living in the area. By the way, I agree, the Comp should do pretty well.
ok-460, 4.88 gears, 35" tires, 4wd, aprox 6500-7000 rmps's, solid cam, c-6 for pulling, stay in first, no numbers on the heads as far as flow, castings are d3ve, forged crank
