Hello,
I have a 96 f150 4x4 with 210,000. This is a work truck. I was interested in changing the rear axle to a dually axle. I thought I would buy a f350 axle and put it on so I can put a cargo box on this truck. Will it work? I do all my own work and am capable if it is possible.
Well if you change the suspension and the rear axle, with a compatible gear ration to your front axle it's possible. The front suspension is not going to be the same height as the rear, by a long shot. What kind of cargo box?
I agree with Packrat. The amount of weight that could be loaded on that big bed, plus the weight of the bed itself could be quite high for the 1/2-ton frame.
The duallies use 2.25" wide rear springs. I think the 150's are 3" wide. I don't know if there will be a clearance issue with the springs and the inside tire if you use 3" springs. I guess the spring hangars could be changed to the skinnier ones from the dually so the duallies springs could be used.
If you get the dually axle, get it from a pickup, not a chassis-cab, since the pickups use the same frame width. Chassis-cabs have a narrower frame.
Also, on the flatbed, Chevy and Ford pickups use different frame widths fromk the 90's down (Fords are wider). Not sure about newer trucks.
Personally, I would just sell the F150 and buy an F350. Would be alot easier and the whole truck is built to take the load.
This truck frequently holds over 2000 pounds in the bed. The 4 wheel drive is much stronger than the 2 wheel drive. I also own the box truck that the box is coming off. Unless someone wants to buy me an f350.
also take into consideration that if you swap only the rear axle to that of a dually, You now need two spare tires. One for the rears, and one for the fronts.
Check the other dually thread in this same forum for more usefull info that has been posted on this swap.
Too bad you're not in Iowa. I have an F-350 rolling frame designed for the box... all the brake lines, hoses, etc ( even the dust sheilds) are new. Has good tires on the back and fair on the front. It must have a dozen leaf springs. I don't need it and I only have 200 in it....
