My f-350 has an aluminum Century cap. I would like to get a canoe and carry it on top. I have seen similar caps with brackets mounted on them that look like they could be used to do the job,but I have never seen it done. I worry that the cap will not carry the weight. Any input?
I had an aluminum basic cap on a 1971 Ford long bed that I carried a canoe on all the time. I put a single gutter mount roof rack on the cab and set the back on the "ladder rack" that was attached to the cap, tied the canoe to the two racks and went anywhere I wanted to go. If you run off road where you might get in a twist I would fasten only to the cap so the canoe can move a bit with the bed as the frame flexes.
Worked for several years.
I had a similar cap on a Ford Ranger that I built a scaffold 12' long on one side for working on semi-trailers and it held me (275 at the time) and a couple hundred pounds of tools, sometimes two of us, for a year with no problems. All on the basic cheapie aluminum cap with the roof racks attached.
i have a roof rack that i didnt install on my camper top before i sold it. i have a porta boat and a very wide fiberglass canoe and was going to use it for that but i sold the camper.
i can send digital pictures, i bought it used but its in great condition. its still in the box.
