i got a check engine light on and went and had it checked out...the mechanic told me that bank one was running lean...he checked what the oxy sensors were reading and he said sensor on 1 was reading rich and lean...back and forth...then he said sensor #2 was reading rich all the time...he recommended changing the oxy sensor and i did but the check engine light came back on after about 30 mins of driving...can someone give me some info on maybe why this is happening....thanks

You have 4 02 sensors. Did you only change 1? You need to change them in pairs. Change the ones closest to the manifold first. Reset your computer by disconnecting your battery for 30 min. Be prepared...... the one on the passenger side is a pain in the @$$!!!!! It will take you longer to get it unplugged than anything else! The drivers side is easy. They are $50 each from Auto Zone or Advance Auto.
thanks for the info....when you said you have to change the oxy sensors in pairs do you refer to both on one side? thanks again
What I meant was that there are 2 upstream sensors... one passenger side and one driver side. These are the 2 that are causing your code. They are located between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter. Then you have 2 down stream sensors. Once again... one driver side and one passenger side. These are located after the catalytic converter. These rarely cause a problem. The ones that are responsible for your code are upstream sensors. You change out the pair upstream.... one passenger side and one on the drivers side. I hope this clears it up a little for you... most of all, be patient with the passenger side. It is a royal pain!
Do not change the O2 sensors before checking for a vaccuum leak. I would bet that you have a leak in the PCV elbow where it attaches into the intake manifold. This is easy to check and replace and cheap too! Reach all the way to the back of the engine, top, rear, center. You will feel a rubber elbow. I would bet it is rotted and leaking. It can be removed by just pulling it out. No tools required. Purchase a PCV vaccuum line at the dealer for $30 to $50 depending on the engine. You will get the entire line but you only need to replace the elbow. Thousands of O2 sensors have been sold by dealers when the only problem is this rubber elbow. Bad O2 sensors will bring on more than just a lean bank indication and the mechanic should know that. Let us know how it works out. Good luck!
