Hi all, I have a 390 in my truck that has the adjustable valve train. The problem I have is that the valve covers that are on it are to short. Whomever put them on there mashed the baffles down so that they would clear the valvetrain. I guess what I need to know is what kind of valve covers should I get? Any help would greatly be appreciated!
If you can locate a old set of Cal-Custom covers they will fit and also have the old cool look of the 60's. They have ribs on the top like old Chebby covers.
File the flaws and bead blase 'em, you'll be happy.
Just about any of the aftermarket valve covers will fit. If you ask me, get some aluminum ones and stay away from stamped steel ones unless you are really good at getting FE's with stamped steel (this includes chrome stamped steel ones) valve covers to seal.
Sometimes you can use a second valve cover gasket for a little more clearance. The FE valve covers in the FMS (ford motorsports) catalog are a little taller to clear the adjustables. Also most of the repro aluminum covers are taller as well....G.
It has after market chrome ones on it now and they hit the rockers @ one time. I'm wanting to go back with aluminum. I'm guessing that this is an after market setup but not sure. I've always been a Ford guy but this is the first FE engine that I have had. The way that the previous owner fixed the problem isnt working out well as the baffles are smashed down flat with the valve cover and the PCV valve isnt working as it should. Where would the best place be to buy some Tall valve covers?
Thanks to all the replied. I'm wanting to start on the resto on this truck soon but I want to get all the mechanicals fixed first. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was referring to the adjustable rockers. If they are the narrow Ford style adjustables, a set of post 67 factory valve covers will work. The baffle in them is narrow enough to clear the rockers. If you have the fancy aluminum adjustable valve train that is considerably wider, then you will need aftermarket covers.
Hey Mke, sorry for the confusion. I think that they are narrow, I cant really remember. I guess I'll have to pop a cover off and get a gander at 'em. I know that it has 68' model heads on it if that helps. I may get a look tomorrow after I use the truck to haul the other truck I just bought. I'll let you know then.
I have another question. I thought that these engines didnt have adjustable rockers on them. Is that true ar was I miss informed? ( as I usually am....lol)
go to the carroll shelby-427 fe web site. ther you can order a set of aluminum valve covers that will fit and realy look sharp. I have a set and am running the Harland Sharp rockers with no problems. i belive they were 169.00 at the time. good luck.
Wow they are proud of their covers, $169 a set and I thought I over paid for a set of used Cal-Custom for $15. All that was needed was a little sanding and bead blast. Plain name covers work unless they pay me to advertise their products.

Thanks again!

Standard issue truck motors, no adjustables. The HP motors did have the adjustables and these can be easily adapted to the rest of the FE family for better valve train management...
Thanks Mike! I have a pic of the adjustables in one of my gallaries. They are in fact the thin factory ones. I'm guessing that they came off the same vehicle that the intake came off of.
