This truck has the Dura spark III ignition with elctronic control for the spark advanve. When I am watching the timing mark with a timing light, the spark retards when the engine is reved, not advance. This seems wrong to me. some of the emmisions controls have been removed, not sure exactly what. I think i would like to switch distributors to one with vacuum advance but need help with the wiring conversion. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks Jim
Replace your Duraspark with an MSD ignition box and drop in an MSD distributor (with vacuum advance) while you're at it. It's a killer combo that's hard to beat.
MSD does make one for the 300 I-6 actually it is the same as a v-8 just set the switch to 6 cyl. and your off. Be carfull about switching things because that truck has a feedback carb and messing with the distributor will cause the computer not to control the carb right and the truck will run horrible if you are going to change the ignition system then you must get a non feedback carb. Summit or Jegs can set you up with what you need

Look, do this, and you'll save a lot of cash besides simplifying your world -
You can get a brand new Duraspark II distributor, coil, plug wire set, and control box at any parts store for around $100.oo US even.
I know, because I went with platinum plugs and the above, plus a cap and rotor for the 302 I'm dropping into my 82 for right about $115 and some change. The plug gap is .60 I think, so it's a high energy system. It's made FOR the truck, and clean when you get it so you can paint it to match your E-Compartment paint scheme (if you have one).
"Gold Mine"---Depends on what it is worth when you're stopped dead on the road. The MotorCraft Dizzys are (IMHO) garbage...went through two in six months...the first one was never quite right and then it finally quit altogether...for another $50 or less you can have the same setup above with an MSD 6A and it will eliminate a ton of problems and give you some kick to boot.
$500 is what they list for with MSD, but you can buy them new from Summit or Jegs for under $200. My ignition system cost me about $500 for the MSD Dizzy (w/vacuum), MSD 6A, MSD 8.5 wires, MSD Blaster Coil, MSD adjustable timer, and MSD capacitor; but I kind of had to shop around before I got all the pieces.
Have you guys ever used one of these one piece units?
They seem to be an easier and cheaper solution.
