hey guys in about two three weeks i am going to be towing a 30' fifth wheel, i have never towed anything like this before, i am just wondering from those of you with experience, how will the 7.3 do. i am kinda curious to hear what you say. i have an 02, single wheel axle.
Don't expect to win any drag races, but it will pull it without much difficulty. Keep in mind that almost everything on the road will have better brakes than you with the trailer back there, so give yourself plenty of room.
Yes you have just got to remember when you pass someone you still have 30 MORE feet of vehicle to get by the person you are passing. When you get into high wind areas take heed and slow down. You'll also feel semi's blowing by you making the rig feel like it is moving slightly sideways. Enjoy and have fun
thanks for tips guys, i think i will take it easy, the only thing i have ever pulled is my 18' ski boat and i cant even feel that its there with my PSD, but i think i will feel this fifth wheel though.
Fifth wheelers tend to track inside your vehicle on corners not to much of a problem when turning left but be careful on right turns.
Like Cookie said you wont win any drag races but you sure wont be hurting for power ya got the right truck.
Last point if you go thru any mountains remember no engine breaking so be very careful on long downhill stretches.
You'll also be pleasantly surprised at how much more stable the whole rig is with the pin weight directly over the rear axle vs hanging off of the rear bumper. You'll definatly feel the weight, but you'll have no trouble pulling it over any pass you want.
What I have found is when you get up to the heavy trailers that the biggest concern is coming back down the other side. The brakes heat up VERY fast if you don't keep control of the speed. The EBPV exhaust brake mod is a life saver for me and not too hard to do on a saturday afternoon. It's very simple if you have a stick shift. If you have an automatic you have to wire to the torque converter lock up also. Otherwise it freewheels on the down hill side and the exhaust brake mod is useless.
I tow a 31' travel trailer, it's only about 8K lbs. Not sure what your 5th is, but you should have no problem. My only comment is around cruse controll, I would recommend only using it on level ground hills seems to make it downshift way to quickly.
