I own a 1997 F150 4x4 Lariat and had the Transmission fluid/filter changed out and coolant flushed today and the guy at the Transmission place took a look at my OD switch on the Drive shifter and told me that the switch had gone bad. I have never tried the button as I bought the truck used a few months ago and have not had any problems with the transmission so I never messed with the button...I got it back from the trans shop this evening and tried pushing it and sure enough, no light, nothing... it will not kick out of OD. Is this something I can try to fix myself and how would one go about doing this? Also what would be the ballpark cost of this?
Thanks!
Bill
How often do you tow? Not sure how much the switch is, but if you are never going to tow with the truck, who cares, run it with the OD and don't worry about it.
If really need or want the switch to work, I can't imagine it is that hard to replace. I replaced the cover on the switch and it looked like the switch would come out quite easy but I didn't need to mess with it so I am not 100% sure on that.
I tow a 17 foot fiberglass bass boat with it occasionally. Total load around 2000lbs.. No hills here in the piedmont of NC, so its not a big strain. I used to tow this boat with my wifes 2002 explorer in OD and she has a 4.0 and I have never had a problem towing with either vehicle.
However, its still broke and I do hate broke things on my vehicles..
There is a fuse in the fuse box under the dash for the OD switch. It should be a 5A, #29.
If the fuse is ok then you could have a faulty switch or a wiring problem. A common are for a wiring problem is under the steering column cover, near the base of the shifter.

The load you tow is nothing for the OD, but I know how you feel about fixing broken things, even if you don't use them.
Racerguy is right I would check the wiring at the base of the shifter. That was the problem I had wiht my 97. I think the shifter was under 100 bucks from the local ford dearler. Not to difficult to replace just have to take tghe steering column covers off and follow the wiring down the steering coloumn. GOOD LUCK!
