Check engine light on w/P0420 code
I read the code and it was catalyst system effeciency below threshold (bank 1). Is this a code for a bad O2 sensor on the passenger's side? It sounds to me like the car is running too lean. I am also having a intermittent problem while in idle that the car will drop in RPM's to around 500 and the car runs very sluggish, is this a problem that is also being caused from the same part?

po420 indicates there is a failure in bank 1 catalyst efficiency. bank 1 is the side of the engine containing number 1 spark plug. this code is generated when the bank 1 sensor 2 switching rate reaches approximately 75% of the front one. this occurs when the exhaust content seen at the rear 02 sensor is almost the same as what is seen at the front sensor indicating little or no catalystactivity. monitor the senser signal wire with a digital voltmeter. if the sensor is an active rich to lean sweep similar to the front sensor, the catalyst efficiency is below threshhold, please note:if working on a 1996 explorer 4.0l and the bank 1 sensor 2 reading shows very little fluctuation indicating normal catalyst activity.
