Electric Fans

Are electric fans the way to go for early Broncos doing normal driving (city) and limited 4X4 driving?

IMO and experience, electric fans will not sufficiently cool for everyday use. You would be better off to keep the engine driven fan or to install a fan clutch that will fit.

i'd say yes, because even ay idle the fan is turning at full speed! i've got a '69 bronco w/t stock 302 & p/s. i am still running the old 6cyl 3 core radiator.
i've got a 16" electric pusher fan mounted in front of my radiator(no thermostat fan runs all the time).
i also have an old auto trans cooler for my p/s mounted behind the radiator.
i have completely removed the engine driven fan.
i do mostly 4x4 driving & limited city driving. the stop & go driving on the trail i think is harder than city driving.
my temp stays between 185 & 200 even on hot days.

I would keep the engine driven fan and if you feel you need more air flow at low speeds, put an electric pusher fan in front of the radiator. There is room for it if you don't have an AC condensor there. A 4-row radiator helps alot too.

I agree with SoCalDeRac,

Just do not trust an electric fan for primary cooling, unless it came from the factory that way. The aftermarket ones for add-on use are fine. We have installed several of the high-bucks electrics, on both personal and customers' vehicles, and just have not found any that do a good job. Just my two-cents-worth...

Thanks all. I have no real reason to do away with the engine-driven fan. I mainly wondered if there was a big benefit in going with an electric fan. If nothing is greatly improved, I'll probably stick with the one I've got.

Now I'll have to consider the same for my '68 F250 crew cab I hope to turn into a trailer puller.

I installed an electric fan in order to buy more space between the rad and the engine when I swapped in a 5.0 EFI. Electric fans are more efficient then the engine fan with respect to parasitic loss, but I'm not sure you're going to notice the difference in fuel economy. If you are thinking of the electric fan route, make sure you check the rating on the fan. I've heard a rule of thumb is that a small block V8 (302 / 5.0) needs at least 2500 cfm from the fan.
