should i use the stock timing chain and gear?

i received a response to a post somewhere along the line where someone suggested that if i replace my timing set in my 88 460 i ought to use a set designed from an earlier year. the advantage was that this other gear would advance the cam timing. should i do this for an offroad rig? i like to drag race at the dunes and hill climb so would this change in timing suit my use of the motor?

In general, "yes". The retarded valve timing on the later engines was done for emissions reasons, not performance. I would recommend going with the Cloyes double roller chain and gears. The gears are all metal, not Nylon and the crank sprocket can be indexed to straight up or 4 degrees retarded or advanced. In addition, it's a real roller chain, not a link-belt like the stocker.

i havent done it myself, but ive noticed the general opinion on here is to get the early 70's timing chain and gear setup, and run it straight up at 0....If im wrong someone will be along to correct me......

I put in one of the older timing chains in my 460. I can't remember the part number but I think I set it up to run advanced. Runs well.
