my nephew was installing a new battery just after changing the old intake manifold gaskets, something happened, there was smoke, i ran to see what was on, he switched the batterie's poles and i think unconciously produced a short circuit while putting on the cables, even tough he didn't start it yet, the horn is working, but the engine doesn't start, could you help me figure out where could be the problem? thanks for any info and advice
There is a neutral start safety switch that could be out of adjustment. Just for a test take and jump the terminal marked S on your starter solenoid to the hot side of the battery. If the engine cranks (make sure it is in neutral) the problem is that switch, or the wiring under the dash.
If it does not, jump the battery hot lead to the starter lead and see if it spins. If it does you have a bad solenoid - assuming the battery is still hot.
If it does not you have a dead battery, or a cable problem (check both the hot and the ground) or a starter problem. I don't think it would be the starter.
What you have done is remove all the switches and wiring from consideration - I use a battery jumper cable for this test and it only takes about 5 min - and gives you a direction to strike out on.
