88 ford econoline purchase

Razer70....Hey guys,
purchased a 88 ford econo E-250 clubwagon. garage kept, x ambulance, owned by state since 88 I purchased it for $3500 bucks.Kelley blue book says $4100.00 retail value. Van has brand new white paint. new 16" wheels pop out chrome trimmed tinted glass on side doors and in rear.Dual fuel tanks, a/c stereo ok for now. ,interior like new, new rear safety cage, not one ding in body it's like perfecly straight no bondo here.5.8 engine plenty of go go and seems to get a surprising 16-17 miles to the gallon.Everything works great. On the down side it needs some things looked at.Any comments on my purchase price and input on these minor prob listed would be appreciated.Any comments on the 5.8 liter engine an it's performance reliability. it's fuel injected and idles a lil arratic probly plugs. when driven it's fine, steering lil loose, sounds like slight exhaust manifold popping on passenger side .But it does need new exhaust straight pipe and muffler.(small hole)I have a flow master 40 series should i put it on? any inputs.I have only had van for few days now. driven bout 150 miles I like ford past van was 84 econo 150 junk now. with a sudden (shaking vibration) problem. (changed all u joints still shaking, so i said heck with it and bought this van for my carpet business.Again any comments good or bad on 5.8,engine idle prob, price i paid, any info. welcomed and much appreciated. Razer70..............

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Jan-02 AT 11:46 PM (EST)]5.8=351w which is a very good and reliable engine. A tune up, including an oil change would be a good start. Check the pcv valve and maybe replace it. If you still have the rough idle, you probably need to disassemble the throttle body/idle control valve and clean them up. A brown sticky goo/varnish will build-up on these parts and can give an erratic idle.

If all else fails, you might have a build-up on the injectors themselves. Take it to the garage and they will disconnect the fuel system and actually run the engine on some potent cleaner they will run through the injectors to clean them.
