I've got an '88, 2.9, Ext cab. The other day I was putting air into the back tire and noticed that the universal joint flang bolts was loose, no problem, grabbed a 1/2 " wrench, crawled under and got a closer look at the bolts. Man, they are weird looking, fluted , like the end of a torx screwdriver. Anyway, I managed to dog them down, but one was missing, so I'm wondering what size bolt would work and do I need the same type bolt to replace the missing one, or would a regular hex bolt work?
I would definitely go and get an exact replacement these are special bolts for that application, as far as installing and removing just use a 12 point wrench or socket and be sure to use some removable loctite bolt retainer and torque them down I am not sure what the torque setting would be off the top of my head and you shouldn't have it happen again....Neil
I called around for the bolt this morning and you should have heard me trying to explain to these clowns about the set up on this truck and what it comes down to was 'there ain't no such bolt', kept trying to sell me the universal bolts. Anyway I went by the Ford place and looked on his computer and kowabonga batman there it was. Cost $2.04. Nobody can tell me the torque on this bolt, any ideas?
My manual says about 70-90 lb-ft. for the flange bolts. You can see why these bolts should be the exact replacement to be able to take that kind of torque. Good Luck!
WOW!!!! 70 to 90 ft #'s! I'll have to see if my Harbor Freight clicker bar even goes that high. I'm too old and fat to be rolling around in the dirt for this.
