E4OD?'s

I have a 93 F-150, 4x4, auto., with a 6 cyl. My transmission is going out and the guys at Cottman's are telling me it will cost around $1800 to rebuild it. Is this a reasonable price? They offer a 12 month/12K mi warranty, which doesn't seem like much for almost $2000. Can anyone tell me if this is a do it yourself project? Is there a cheaper transmission I could replace it with? Thank you.

E4OD.....
hmmmm, check all the sensors before dismissing anything on that tranny.
How is the fluid?
Filter been changed?

Might be worth it to drain and refill the tranny and TC at least once more before dismissing the tranny as bad. I almost replaced the tranny in my F350, then I checked the computer codes, found out it was my FIPL was out of place, AND a sensor was bad. Saved me 2 grand just testing and replaced 1 sesnor. That was in the summer, and she been runnign strong ever since...

I have changed the fluid and filter but it still slip's. How do I check the codes? Is this something I'll have to take back to Cottman's for? Thanks for your help.

How many miles were on it when you changed the fluid?

Has it ever been changed??

if its got more than 100,000 miles and the fluid hasnt been changed, when you change it your almost promising that your gonna have tranny problems, the partculate matter suspended in the fluid after that much time is actually making the tranny work. without it, it will start to slip due to the lack of the particals,

But if it had been changed at say 50,000 and then at 100,000 it shouldent bother it.

Interesting isnt it, I kinda just scratched my head when I learned it from my professor, but it sorta makes sense.

My friends dodge ram had the problem , It had 160,000 miles on it, and I changed the fluid for him, well i didnt want to but a cooler line broke, and while it was sitting drained most of the fluid out, and about a month after the new lines were installed, the transimssion started to slip badly, now it is awaiting a rebuild, go figure.

I changed it at 155,000. I don't know if it was the first time or not, I bought it when it had about 152,000. It started slipping and I thought it wouldn't hurt to get some new fluid in there. I guess I may have been wrong. Yes, it's very interesting.

Question Particulate matter helps?

Particulate matter is making it work? An automatic transmission is a fluid pump dependant of fluid resistance/ lack of compressability, and torque to transmit force through planetary gear sets to the drive shaft. I do change my fluid/filter every 60,000 miles, but this one is lost on me. I have lived with automatic transmissions from the powerglide 2 speed transmission to the Allison 6 speed transmission in on of our Freightliners. I have never heard that theory. The fairly exhaustive hydraulics courses we took in A stage in Pensecola never mentioned the benefits of particulate matter. I guess there is something to learn everyday. I will still, however, continue to change my fluid/filter every 60,000 miles. I am @ 241,050 and no issues.
Nope, can't let it go. Just curious. If the filter is present to trap and isolate particulate matter, and it is working, not clogged, which will cause transmission issues, what class of particulate matter is the "good" particulate matter. Is this like Good and bad Cholesterol?

ell its just what ive been told, and am being taught by a couple, ford certified master techs, but i didnt really think it made a diffrence, but my teachers seem to think it does. im still caught in the middle, id have to see hard evidence.

But throwing out ideas, other than what i said before, im unfamiliar with the ED0D.

but if it was slipping before the fluid change, it seems it wouldent be the fluid.

and when i looked in my c-6 while changing the fluid, the "filter" was nothing more than a screen, there was not filter to speak of, and as you stated, there is not better thing to do to a tranny than change the fluid on the intervals.

No problem, I'm not a Ford Certified master Mechanic. I do most of my own maintenance to avoid the cost, scrooge at heart, and it's satisfying.

Assuming you have an E4OD, my experience at least with my 94 is that the filter is a paper element inside a rather large plastic enclosure.

There is a theory going around that a tranny that has a lot of miles on the old fluid may fail if the fluid is changed. The theory is either 1)Good particles bad particles or 2) The new ATF cleans out all the crud which then gets into the works or 3) The crud is what is keeping the clearances inside the valve body and other places sufficient to keep the tranny working.

If I was to vote for any of the theories I would vote 2 then 3. I think a tranny that has never had the fludi changed and has a lot of miles was on borrowed time and was already failing, which is why most people finally change it.

Either way, you got more than the average miles on a 93 E4OD. The pre 95s had problems with longevity and there were a lot of upgrades over the years.

Not a tranny expert, just got to pay one several years ago to rebuild my 94 E4OD.

BTW the manual recommends 30K mile changes for "normal" driving and 12K changes for "severe" duty. Most of us city drivers and a lot of farm drivers fit under "severe", check you manaul and see if "sever" describes the way you drive, I bet it does. Stop and go, short trips, hot weather, dust, towing idling etc is considered "severe".

Good Luck,

JIm Henderson
