Hi, I'm new to this board and I have my first Ford truck. My family has always had Fords, but I bucked the trend and my main truck is a Dodge. Anyway, I have an '86 F-150 4x4 that is a blast to drive, so I decide to fix her ills and began to tear the truck down. The body was pretty rusty and will need attending to. But first the engine. The truck has the great 300 inline 6. The odometer has 46,000 miles on it but who knows if that is 146,000 or 246,000. Anyway, how do I get the fan clutch assembly off? It is the style with a big nut holding onto the shaft. The usual methods i use on my antique tractors do not apply here. Thanks for all the help! This forum has been amazing with the amount of information.
There is a tool available to remove the fan from the water pump . Part of the tool holds the water pump pulley , it fits over the bolts on the pulley , the other part fits over the nut on the fan clutch , this is what actually loosens the fan from the end of the water pump . Its right hand thread on the fan which means it turns the opposite way to loosen . So if you are standing in front of the truck , to loosen the fan the wrench will have to turn to the right hand side of the truck , toward the battery . Also , Those fan clutch tools come on different sizes , Some are for the 300 engines , for the Explorers & the Diesel engine trucks . I think most part stores will rent them if you dont want to purchase it .
