hey everyone whats the best cold air intake i can buy? i dont care about prices i just want the most horsepower gain. so what do you think brand i should go with like mac, air raid, k&n? which one will get me the most horsepower gain?
MAC is the only one with dyno figures. Go with the one with the biggest filter. Beyond that, there is little to distinguish beyond shape material, and tube diameter. K&N has a little heat sheild thing though.
I say MAC. It's dyno proven at 12.6. But that is a very amiguous quote. Use the search tool to see the long debate we had about it awhile back.MAC is just as good as any other in my eyes. Plus it's shiny.
First off, I would like you to go through the performance thread...there is a listing of all the Intakes you could look through...
Honestly, if you want power you need to go with more than an Intake, but I would suggest MAC over the rest. It's the most effective Intake...like $150 for it shipped to you. Others go up to $250. Anyways, they all do the same thing. If you really want your truck to be noticeably faster, you need to get some gearing, a cam (207/215), some P&P's heads, and a dyno-tune from somewhere that know what the heck they are doing. If you get that, use some 4.10 gears with a limited slip setup, and get all the bolt-ons... ie: headers, intake, exhaust, high-flows or Y-pipe, e-fans, pulley (maybe), roller rockers, etc...
With that setup, you would run 14's n/a. If you want to go any faster than that, you will need to run a power adder. NOS is the cheaper route, but is more crucial on your engine. Our engines can take "responsibly" a 125 shot. That, will all those bolt-ons with a 5-speed regular cab truck will get you 12's I'm sure. If not NOS, wait until you get a decent turbo setup to come out or SC setup. Any faster than that and you're talking forged internals, porting and polishing, and I'll stop there.
Anyhoo, I kinda went off on a bunch of tangents, but you all know me! Also, I get my info from a guy that really knows his crap about these trucks as well as his friends in high places.
Also, consider weight reduction if you are like REALLY SERIOUS about going crazy.
wow, talk about a long ways done the road Joe! haha
Yea, I'd definetly go with the MAC, same damn thing as the rest, comes with a MAC filter which is basically the exact same as a K&N (looks the same, rewashable every 50K, just as good) and the chroming on the tube is awesome.
I have the MAC cold air intake. I just installed it about two weeks ago. I can't say I noticed any horsepower difference, although it makes a nice sound under the hood, and the chrome tubing definitely looks cool.
hey country,
i've seen those mac's on ebay, are those real or knockoffs?
also, you said you didnt notice a big jump in power (or feel the power) did you notice any better gas mileage?
I have noticed slightly better gas mileage, something like maybe 1 or 2 mpg better, although I put my Mac Intake on at the same time as I put my Flowmaster on, so I'm sure its a combination of the two giving the gas mileage jump. On the power issue, it claims 12.6 rwhp, although it is hard to notice that amount so I am sure it is there its just hard to feel it.
Yes the Macs on ebay from Brentspeed (I think that is his ebay name) are the real deal. They come with all the parts, directions for install, and Mac stickers, and a lifetime warranty from Mac.
country4.2,
i'll probly get one of those macs off of ebay this summer then
what flowmaster did you have put on, how much was it? dual exhaust or just the muffler? i'm looking for about anything to beef up my 4.2, it needs it.
does it sound any good w/ the new exhaust?
how much are electric fans? would i take the stock one out? would i have to add some sort of chip to make them run right? are they vehicle specific or to you just have to engineer something yourself?
I have a Flowmaster 40 series original flow muffler. It is a si/do catback setup. I have 2.5" pipe running from the muffler straight out the back with 3.5" wide angle cut chrome tips welded on the end. the interior resonance is noticeable at all rpm levels and I think it sounds really good on idle. When you stomp on it, the sound does get strained, although that is to be expected from a six cylinder.
The muffler was $64, and the installation including the tips was $200 even so total cost when tax is figured in is right around $275.
I had it done at Lafferty Automotive in College Corner, Indiana. They do very nice work.

I got my exhaust done for $125. The tip I have costed $75 bucks too, so that was most of the cost haha. All I had them do was cut the stock muffler off, and run one single pipe out the side to the dual-tip.
