I am looking at a 2003 ranger supercab, it has a 3.0 engine in it and i was wondering if i could do a motor swap and add a worked 5.0 motor in there, kinda like svt did but without having to move the firewall and everything. has anyone done this swap? If anyone knows where i could find info on doing engine swaps that would be greatly appreciated, thanks--Dinty01
have you checked the engine swap fourum? you might want to consider a 4.0, get about the same output as a 302 but a lot less weight and you'll have more clearance with a 60 degree V6 vs. a 90 degree V8. although if i had the time and money i wouldnt mind putting in a mildly modified 302 with a C6 and dana 300.
I posted this thread in the swap forum as well, I did consider a 4.0 but i dont have one available to me at the moment and i dont want to pay for one as they might get alittle expensive, so i have a friend who has a 5.0 out of a 93 mustang that needs a home and we have been talking about doing the conversion just to see how it works out. Then maybe next year pull the motor and rebuild it and throw a blower on it, if it needs it, it may not need it, but we'll see, thanks for your reply.
Yea, this swap would be kind of pricey, but i have most of the big components within reach, places i work at/hang out have the motor i want, from a 93 auto gt, another one has the trans, one has the maf harness and ecm, i know which intake i want along with the mass air unit i want, the rear is sitting at another shop and the trans is at another, i just nees to rebuild the trans and engine and the rear, plus add a whole bunch of little things that i found out about on the rangerstation.com and rangerpowersports.com last night. It seems to be a pretty straight forward swap, nothing too difficult, I used to do engine swaps at a former job so im pretty familiar with how to do a swap, but they were mostly remove spent engine and replace with new, same type engine, not biger or smaller which was easy. Thanks for your replies--Dinty01
yea it is a good swap to make. and stay EFI, if you can on doing this swap.
I had went the carb route the engine I got had a throttle body and that didn't work out for changing over so I went simple and went with a carb.
It runs great when warmed up but those cold wisconsin morning's you have to let her warm up a bit before trying to go anywhere. LOL
There is a web site I think http://members.aol.com/MREPRODUCT/ranger.htm
they have a book for sale on doing this swap all information about tranny's length and motor length's, etc. some say it is worth the price others not.
I have it and if you watch Ebay you can find a used book every now and then. also the other site you listed are very good for information about doing this.
